On the eve of the French Revolution, the Bastille becomes a madhouse of political misfits : a woman carrying the King's illegitimate child after a royal assault, a disgraced police chief accused of peddling rancid meat, and the Marquis de Sade himself - holed up in his cell, feverishly scribbling filthy fantasies and locked in endless philosophical sparring matches with his loudmouthed, insatiably opinionated penis...
A live-action fable about the Marquis de Sade - and his talking penis - during his time in the Bastille, where every character sports the head of an animal. This extraordinary film is wildly and outrageously explicit in every sense, yet never truly pornographic. The rubber animal masks, while surprisingly expressive, serve as a constant reminder that this is a twisted fairy tale, an allegorical parade of clashing symbols in a surreal philosophical carnival, and a truly fucked-up and highly enjoyable film.
