PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE : ORIGINAL VERSION RESTORATION · HD

The uncensored original version of Phantom of the Paradise, before it was butchered pre-release due to a nasty lawsuit.

Immediately prior to the release of Phantom of the Paradise, director Brian De Palma and editor Paul Hirsch were forced to remove nearly all references to "Swan Song Enterprises", the fictional record label owned by the character Swan. This was due to the name’s similarity to a real-life record company. The changes were made hastily, leaving visible scars that marred the look and integrity of the film.

Now, after 50 years, fans can finally experience Brian De Palma’s PHANTOM like never before.

This version utilizes original footage salvaged by the incredible Swan Archives, transferred from 35mm to HD and meticulously restored. The goal is to present the film as it might have appeared prior to these last-minute alterations. All deleted footage has been enhanced and color-corrected to match the existing material. Some original audio and soundtrack cues associated with the excised footage were never located, and have been faithfully recreated and mixed with the original 1974 stereo track, preserved from a lossless source.

By comparing this version to the theatrical release, we can finally appreciate how the film was (ironically, given its story) disfigured against its creators’ wishes to satisfy corporate rights holders. This unofficial HD reconstruction of the director’s cut was lovingly restored for Brian De Palma, whose masterpiece should never have been mutilated by those greaseballs.

And fuck Peter Grant.
